The Bahamas’ rich pirate history means there’s no shortage of exciting pirate facts and stories to uncover when you’re visiting Nassau Paradise Island. Why not get in the mood for some swashbuckling fun in the sun by finding out what famous pirate you’d be if you were rum running and privateering back in the golden age of pirates.

Edward Teach

You might recognize Edward Teach by his other name, Blackbeard. He was one of the most feared pirates to sail the waters of The Bahamas. He would intimidate his adversaries by weaving hemp into his beard and setting it afire. Teach started off with a single ship and amassed a great pirate fleet. Despite being fearsome and ruthless in his capture of ships, Blackbeard was actually known to treat his prisoners fairly. Like Teach, you are a natural leader with a strong (if questionable) moral compass.

Henry Avery

One of history’s oft forgotten and most important pirates was Henry Avery, who is in many ways responsible for Nassau becoming the pirate hub it would be. Like Avery, you’re tenacious and like to dream big. You’re always on the go and love to try new experiences, not unlike Avery’s fleet of pirate ships (one of the fastest at sea) overtaking ships throughout the Indian Ocean, before settling in Nassau in 1696.

Benjamin Hornigold

Benjamin Hornigold was one of Nassau’s infamous pirates. His ship, The Ranger, was rumored to be one of the most heavily armed in the region, allowing him to win his battles with ease. After receiving a king’s pardon in 1718, Hornigold worked as a pirate hunter throughout The Bahamas. Like Hornigold, you know how to hold your ground in an argument and stand up for what’s right.

Jack Rackman

Jack Rackman was commonly called Calico Jack, thanks to his bright jackets made out of the material. Calico Jack operated in and around The Bahamas during the golden age of piracy and was well known as he had two female crew members. Like Jack Rackman, you’ve got an eye for style and an open heart.
